Ian Reed’s Lighting Workshop
20th August 2017

The morning began with Ian reminding us of the necessity of good Health and Safety when using lighting equipment. Not only explaining the general principles but also the more specific requirements when handling certain types of lighting, accessories and stands.

There then followed an interesting review of the evolution of lighting for movies explaining the pros and cons of performance and pricing for each advancement. Ian had prepared a very useful comprehensive handout.

The afternoon session was in two parts. First a lighting demonstration by Andy Wills explaining three point lighting techniques, first using LED lights and then replacing some of the lighting with daylight and a reflector.

This was followed by a practical exercise filming (and lighting) “someone on the move”. Everyone got involved with a scene of Ann walking along the entrance hall, entering the living room and then sitting down to talk with Jack and Arf. Several takes before and after applying different lighting demonstrated the benefit of the day's tuition.

As part of the summer workshops for members programme, Ian Reed welcomed movie makers to his home for an all day lighting workshop.
