A friendly club

A Friendly Club

You’ll get a warm welcome! Enjoy meeting other people with a passion for making films. Pick up tips and ideas. There’s always plenty of time for a good chat, when you can get help and advice from knowledgeable members.

Hands on

Some evening meetings are practical sessions on an aspect of film making such as lighting or interview technique.  Occasionally we  split into groups and each group makes a little film during the evening.

Beginners welcome

Beginners Welcome

We were all beginners once! Never made a film? Got a new camera? Need help editing your clips? Join us. Surprise yourself - you can learn a lot in a short time.

Who are we?

We are a bunch of friendly film making enthusiasts.  Some of us have high tech cameras and equipment – some of us have no film equipment at all!  Some enjoy helping out on set, or writing or acting.  And some of us just love films – watching and talking about them!

Improve your skills

Improve Your Skills

Evening meetings include talks by guest speakers or members with special expertise in particular areas.  You'll find there are plenty of opportunities to learn from experienced members who are keen to help to solve your film making problems.

Club projects

We have fun making films together. Whether as an actor, a member of the crew or an extra pair of hands, joining in group projects is very popular. See members' comments on making “It Won’t Take a Minute”.

Have a go at a set ‘challenge’ to develop your skills. See how others tackle the same challenge. See how we did the “Making a Cup of Tea” camera angles challenge.

An audience for your movie

Many members enjoy making their own individual films: holiday films, music videos, documentaries and little fiction films. As short as 60 seconds, or as long as you like. Show your films to an appreciative audience!

An Audience for Your Movie

Members who own special equipment are often keen to use it to help out with other members’ films. Some examples: a drone, radio mics, a steadycam, lighting equipment.

Or can you help us make better films?

We are keen to make better films. Watch the films on this website to see how our skills are developing. If you are a bit of an expert, maybe you can help us raise our standard even higher?

How Long has the Club been going

Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers has staying power! It began way back in 1937 as The Vesey Amateur Cine Society. Its ability to adapt to change and to welcome new technology is one reason why it continues to be a thriving club.
